All of us, yes, including those that we think of as being really stoic, will readily admit that at times life seems to be particularly tough and rough. It is at these times that we succumb to stressful situations that basically seem to sap the life out of us. At these times our moods take a dip to the negative and undesirable emotions of worry, anger, confusion and frustration.
These situations come in cycles and it is vital to understand just what it takes to lift ourselves out of these ruts. All of us have individual ways to relax, unwind and re-energize. Best of all, most of these cost nothing; those that do require spending are quite soft on the pocket. Read on:
1Listening to Relaxing Music
Perhaps the most popular way to relax is to listen to soothing music. Music is said to be the food of the soul, and for good reason. There are some pieces of music that have that soothing effect on us when times are tough. These often make us sing along, tap along or even rise to dance to the same. Having identified the type of music that helps you calm down, you can burn a CD of the same or indeed several CDs such that you can conveniently reach for these when you feel the urge to refresh your body and mind.
2Mellow Down your Voice
When we become stressed, we tend to talk or shout in particularly irritating voices, which may be quite helpful but only briefly. After releasing the steam in this way we need to relax and toning down our voices is one to do so. This technique not only applies to the tone we use to talk to others but also to that which we use when talking to ourselves. Using a low and soft tone in your mind has been observed to help us simmer down even in the face of nasty, heated confrontations.
3Staying Away from Stimulating Drinks
When we are already under some level of stress, the use of certain drinks will only serve to aggravate a nasty situation simply because they contain stimulating elements like caffeine. Some of the drinks to stay away from when we need to mellow down include such beverages as coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks like soda. Instead of these, we will be better off preparing alternatives like herbal teas and fresh fruit juice. Not only is drinking these a good way to relax but they are actually very nutritious to the body and they have positive health benefits. This realization will also help us feel good about having made responsible health choices and thus contribute to our relaxing effort. In the event that such drinks are unavailable then good old plain bottled water will restore our body balance and help us keep cool.
4Take a Breather
This is a good way to relax especially when you don’t have the luxury of time. It so happens that we are sometimes involved in a series of work deadlines such that completing one and moving to the next makes us feel quite tense. We often cannot get through such a series without feeling like we are almost at a threshold. Taking a breather then becomes a necessary step; whenever you feel this way you should just complete that particular activity and halt for a while, maybe take a brief walk before returning to the work station. The same applies when you are working with a person who is particularly irritating. Before you reach a snapping point, it is wise to take a breather and come back in a more composed mood.
5Rejuvenate a Hobby or Cultivate a New One
This is especially helpful for people who always seem to be stuck in a repetitive job. There is certainly some time that one can afford to be away from the work environment and making use of these times to relax can prove to be the elixir needed for sustained productivity. When you have a free afternoon, for instance, you can rediscover a hobby you had in your youth, perhaps it was cooking, photography, or even playing a game of squash. Alternatively you can decide to discover yet another activity that can really help you fend off that nagging ennui. Yes, hobbies are very effective ways to relax.
6Talk to Someone
Talking to someone as a way to relax does not necessarily mean that the other person is the mentor; you can get equally relaxed by mentoring a younger person/colleague. Consulting a mentor is a healthy way to get re-inspired and motivated especially when things seem to have conspired against you. Your mentor of choice has to be a careful pick – someone you respect and one who has been up and down the same avenue that is proving to be a bother for you.
7Unplugging
This is one of the easiest ways to relax, basically because you can do it even at your workstation. You don’t have to go out for a walk if you don’t want to. Just switch off your cell phone and computer, sit back and enjoy the silence. If you cannot relax with your eyes open then just shut them and recede into your mind’s silence. Pretty soon you will realize that you have become calm and that the piling stress will have eased.
