How to Beat Insomnia

There are many reasons why people suffer from insomnia – the condition whereby a person feels as if the quantity of sleep they get at night time is inadequate. Some of the more common reasons for insomnia include depression, stress, using certain medications, poor sleeping habits, and anxiety.

In America the number of people who experience frequent insomnia is estimated at 60 million annually. This condition becomes more underlined with advances in age and it tends to affect more women than men, 40% and 30% of these sexes, respectively. People with insomnia may take awhile to fall asleep or if they do fall asleep they will tend to wake up frequently throughout the night. As a result, the person’s daytime activities are negatively affected. Luckily, there are natural and cheap ways to overcome insomnia. Read on:

1Insomnia Remedy: Setting a Sleep Schedule

One natural way through which you can overcome insomnia is by setting the times at which you will sleep at night and wake up in the morning. This is a schedule you should maintain each day since disrupting the same may lead to an insomnia relapse. Lots of discipline is required for this initiative. For instance, you should resist the temptation of taking an afternoon nap because this will make it hard for you to fall asleep that night.

2

Insomnia Remedy: Keep Away from Alcohol, Caffeine and Nicotine

Another natural way to beat insomnia which will prove to be cheap indeed is to abstain from using drinks that contain caffeine especially when your set sleeping time is a few hours away. These drinks are very stimulating in nature and they will only serve to keep you awake for longer. In this list we can include examples like soft drinks, chocolate, coffee, non-herbal teas, and a variety of diet pills and painkillers. The nicotine contained in cigarettes has also been identified as a cause of insomnia in smokers. Their sleep tends to be very light in nature and thanks to nicotine withdrawal they tend to rise up early in the morning. Alcohol behaves in a similar manner – drinkers are deprived of the deep sleep which is most desirable for adequate rest.

3

Insomnia Remedy: Exercise Frequently

It is a very good idea to have a daily exercise workout, say for about 20-30 minutes, as this really helps one to sleep easily. Having the workout a short time before bedtime is ill-advised because this has been noted to interfere with sleeping patterns. The best time for a workout is 5-6 hours before you crawl into bed.

4

Insomnia Remedy: Engage in Relaxing Activity Before Bedtime

This is a natural and inexpensive way to overcome insomnia – there are actually several techniques that you can employ to get your body fully relaxed. Some of these include reading, meditation, deep breathing, yoga, listening to soft music, and even taking a warm bath. With a fully relaxed body you will find it easier to fall asleep.

5

Insomnia Remedy: Make Your Bedroom Sleep-Friendly

Your bedroom should complement your sleeping efforts for you to overcome insomnia naturally. First of all this room should be dark and quiet. Invest in some dark curtains or shades to create that desirable light-proof environment. A pair of earplugs may come in handy to keep away unwanted nighttime noises. You should also ensure that the bedroom temperature is conducive to sleeping – avoid extreme temperatures, hot or cold, as these will disrupt your sleep or indeed prevent you from getting any sleep.

6

Insomnia Remedy: Ensure Your Bed is Comfortable

There is no way you are going to overcome insomnia if your bed does not let you sleep as well as you should. A bed may be uncomfortable if its mattress is too hard or too soft. You will also not be comfortable in a bed that does not allow you to stretch as you please. Sharing a tiny bed with someone else or with a pet, for that matter, will do little to get you adequate sleep.

7

Insomnia Remedy: Don't Overindulge

As a natural and cheap way to overcome insomnia, you should make a habit of refraining from eating and drinking too much, especially late at night. Too much food may lead to indigestion problems and thus a lack of sleep, while having too much to drink may cause you to wake frequently to urinate.

8

Insomnia Remedy: Don't Take Your Worries to Bed

There is no point in trying to sleep when you have a lot of worries on your mind. The best way to tackle this common cause of insomnia is to find an activity that will keep you relaxed until you feel adequately sleepy.
