benefits of exercise for the elderly

Everyone knows that exercise is good for you, and this is especially true of the elderly. Find out about the benefits of exercise for the elderly and why this is such an important topic for seniors.

Nobody likes to get old. In fact, a lot of people spend a lot of time and money into fighting the aging process as much as they can.
You can’t blame them, because as you age, you get slower, lose mental focus and begin to have many more problems with illness and injury.

Knowing the benefits of exercise for the elderly is a great way to learn how to use physical activity to slow down the aging process.

1

The fact is that many of the problems people associate with getting older are actually a result of not being as active.

When you are not as active as you used to be, it will result in a loss of muscle mass, a slower metabolism, poor flexibility and a decrease in mental functioning.

Getting enough exercise can help you reduce all of those age related problems.

2Better Cognitive Functioning

Multiple studies have shown a positive link between exercise and better mental functioning. Some studies have identified an increase in memory enhancing connections (which improves your memory). Other studies focus on the fact that exercise increases the flow of oxygen. This results in improved concentration and reaction time. There are also studies that have proven a connection between exercise and better decision making and problem solving skills.

One of the best benefits of exercise for the elderly is the fact that it will improve your brain power in multiple different ways.

3The Benefit of Better Balance

One of the problems faced by elderly people is the loss of balance. This results in an increase in the number of falls. Since seniors usually have lower bone density, it results in more broken bones as you age. A fear of falling actually makes some seniors limit the activities they take part in. Of course, the more they limit their activities, the weaker they get, etc.

A proper exercise program will improve your muscle tone and your balance. Both of these will give you the benefit of being more stable, which will reduce the risk of a fall. It will also give you more confidence to stay involved in the activities you love.

4Better Social Interaction is a Benefit of Exercise

One of the great benefits of exercise for the elderly is that it is an easy way for the elderly to stay social. As people age, they tend to be more reclusive and this is bad for them physically, emotionally and mentally.

Being involved in exercise groups, ballroom dancing clubs, or just groups of friends who get together to walk are all ways to get the physical as well as social benefits of exercise for the elderly.

5Maintain Muscle Strength

Another big problem for elderly people is the loss of muscle mass.

This affects their ability to remain independent because they may lose the strength to perform many activities that are required throughout a typical day. Poor muscle strength is also likely to make you more susceptible to falls or accidents.

Improved muscle strength is one of the big benefits of exercise for the elderly.

6A Longer Life

Are there any benefits of exercise for the elderly that are more important than having a longer life? Countless studies have been done that prove time and time again that you will live longer if you exercise.

Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t have to be hours of workouts every day to give you benefits.

One of the more well known research studies looked at two groups of older men. One group walked less than one mile each day. The other group walked more than two miles each day. The group that walked less than a mile was twice as likely to die an early death.

7Summary of the Benefits of Exercise for the Elderly

Everyone gets benefits from exercise. Whether you are a teenager, an adult or a senior citizen, you will be healthier, smarter and less prone to accidents if you exercise. However, these benefits are more pronounced for elderly people because they are beginning to fight the battle of getting older. The best anti-aging plan you can find is all about getting enough exercise.
