benefits of mental exercise

What are the benefits of mental exercise? If you don’t know the answer to this question, it’s really important that you learn not only why it’s important, but also how to do it.

Everyone knows why you’re supposed to exercise, right? Over time, if you don’t exercise your muscle strength will weaken and that will leave you much more susceptible to injury, illness and even disease.

Granted, everyone gets a little exercise each day just by living your life. However, for most people the exercise you get as a part of your daily life isn’t challenging enough for your muscles. Over time, your muscles will weaken.

The same thing applies to your brain. If you want to retain your brain power, you have to get enough exercise for it.

1What Are the Benefits of Mental Exercise?

The biggest benefit of mental exercise is that it keeps your brain working. The old adage “if you don’t use it, you lose it” definitely applies to your brain power.

People who go back to school later in life frequently find it much more difficult to study. This is because they haven’t been using their brain enough and it has forgotten how to learn new things.

The good news is that you can gain back this ability. In fact, when you exercise your brain, you can even get better at certain things.

Here are a few of the things that have been proven to be benefits of mental exercise:

  • Learn more quickly
  • Think more logically
  • Be more creative
  • Improved memory
  • Better focus

Now that you can answer the question “What are the benefits of mental exercise”, it’s time to talk about some of the activities that you can use to keep your mind sharp.

2Practice New Skills

Trying to get better at something that is new to you is a great mental exercise. It forces you to concentrate and apply some mental discipline to practice. You don’t have to become an expert, just practice until you get relatively good and then find another new skill to focus on.

3Break a Habit

A great way to get some of the benefits of mental exercise is to break one of your habits. This doesn’t have to be a long term change. You can benefit from doing something as simple as changing your breakfast. Take a different route home from work. Pick a different day of the week to do your grocery shopping.

These are easy things to do, but they are enough to make your brain process them in a different way.

4Add Restrictions

A great way to keep your brain in shape is to put restrictions on your daily activities. Try to wash yourself while you keep your eyes closed. Walk backwards to get to your kitchen. Read a short article upside down. Any of these types of things will help you to get some mental exercise.

5Learn Something New

Pick a subject that you always thought was interesting and start researching it. You might even look for a class at your local community college or seek online courses to help you with this.

Learning about something new will help to stimulate your brain and provide some of the benefits of mental exercise.

6Do Puzzles

Spending time doing puzzles has always been a great way to get the benefits of mental exercise. However, you have to make sure that the puzzles you are doing don’t become routine because then you stop seeing the benefits. Choose puzzles that will be challenging enough to make you really have to think to complete them. However, don’t pick puzzles that will be too difficult for you to complete, because then you might give up.

7Visualize

This is a great technique to work on your concentration skills. Go to a quite place and visualize yourself eating an apple. Don’t just see a general picture, focus on the sound and the feel when you take a bite. Take yourself through each individual bite and see how long you can focus on it.

When you start, your image will likely quickly become clouded or you will lose focus. However, if you do this for a few minutes each day you will be able to focus on more bites each day.

8Start a Journal

You can get many of the benefits of mental exercise through writing things down. It doesn’t have to be a professional essay, it actually doesn’t even have to make very much sense. You just have to go through the process of putting your thoughts into words.

Now you can answer the question “what are the benefits of mental exercise” and you know many different techniques to exercise your brain. It’s time to get started!!
