10 Things You Don't Need to Buy

As the economy becomes more unpredictable, consumers find themselves cutting back on luxuries that they have become accustomed to. You may find it hard to sit down and think about what you can eliminate from your expenses, but your budget needs some attention and saving money is more crucial now than ever. Here is a list of 10 things that you really can cut out to save you money each month.

1Movies

The movie theater can be cut out of your expenses. If you take the family out once per week to enjoy a movie and some popcorn, start having movie night at home. Sign up for Netflix instead; their lowest rate is under $5.00. You can purchase microwave popcorn, make a movie dinner, and invite everyone to gather around your television for movie night. If you have a couple of strings of outdoor rope lighting, you can place it down the center of the walkway to set the theater mood when you turn the lights out.

2Eating Out

Eating out needs to stop. People just don’t take the time to eat at home anymore, but this is where it needs to start. If you know you are going out, fix you or the family a simple lunch or dinner, depending on when you go to town. If it’s a nice day, place everything in a picnic basket and spend thirty minutes eating lunch at the park instead.

3Vacations

If your family goes on a vacation each year, you may need to find another way to enjoy time off without the huge expense. You don’t have to give up traveling with your family, but do it in a different way. Most people go on week long vacations and the price to stay somewhere is often extremely expensive but you can cut that cost out in several ways. Find a places to enjoy that are closer to home as this will eliminate the need for lodging. There are a lot of different places to see around your home that you may not have seen yet and you could break it down to a Sunday drive. Choose one place to go and pack a picnic lunch. If you do find a vacation spot that has you traveling, find another couple or family to go with and split the cost of a vacation home. You can also cut expenses while vacationing by only eating out one time each day or one time during your entire vacation. Instead spend your food money at the grocery store.

4Expensive Groceries

A trip to the grocery store can be very expensive, but if you plan everything in advance it won’t be. You want a balanced breakfast, a lunch that you can pack, and dinner that is healthy. Spend Sunday’s preparing the meals for the week. Prepare your cooking ingredients ahead of time so that when you prepare a meal you cut down on your time in the kitchen. You can also cut your food bill by growing your own food. If you don’t have the room to plant a full garden, buy some pots and potting soil and grow vegetables in a pot indoors. Growing your own food will help cut the cost of your food bill and there is nothing that taste any better then food grown at home. Read our "Grocery Shopping on a Budget" article for some more tips.

5New Vehicles

Don’t buy another new vehicle. Instead search around for a used one that will last a while and serve the same purpose as a new vehicle. Buy a used car or truck from someone you know. If you don’t know the person, you will want to check the vehicle over before you buy it. When you buy a used vehicle, you will have lower monthly payments and you may even afford to pay it all off at once. This will help you save money a lot of money in the long run.

6Brand-Name Clothing

Buying new clothes is a luxury. Instead of shopping for brand name clothing, shop at local thrift shops. You can find name brand clothing there but at a huge discount.

7Jewelery

Buying new jewelry is also something else you can cut out, but if you do need to buy it then at least look out for the used deals. People sometimes sell jewelry on eBay because they need the money, they don’t wear the jewelry anymore, or they are selling an estate. Ebay can give you a huge variety of jewelry to choose from at a very low price compared to the store.

8Cell Phones

Even cell phones can be considered a luxury. One that almost everyone has become accustomed to. If you cannot do without our cell phone then downsize your plan to go with the minimum. Go with a company that offers unlimited phone to phone, a circle of friends and family, free incoming calls, or free nights and weekends. This will allow you to go with the minimum plan and get free unlimited calling to those you talk with the most. If you really want to cut back, you can go with a prepaid service instead.

9Magazine Subscriptions

Magazine and book subscriptions can cost a lot of money and so is certainly something that you can cut out. People subscribe to a few of these magazines that are delivered to their home every month. These subscriptions can be very expensive so stop the subscriptions and start reviewing the magazines online. Instead, you could treat yourself to a magazine every now and then when you go to the grocery store. But buy one magazine to view.

10Spas and Beauty Shops

Cut your expenses by eliminating the visits to the Spa, nail salon, or beauty shop. This is a luxury that you cannot afford. Instead, you and your friends can go in together to order a Spa in the box and do your own nails at home. This box contains enough supplies for everyone in your small group to feel great. It is also half the cost of a trip to the spa. If you don’t like to do your own nails, pay your teen or your best friend to do your nails for you. Haircuts on the other hand can't be avoided, but consider scheduling appointments for everyone in your family to go to the salon on the same day. You may receive a family discount when everyone gets a haircut at the same time.

-Conclusion

There are so many different ways that you can cut down on expenses and reduce your weekly budget. If you want to save money, start a list of things that you do not need. You may not need to cut them out completely, but do find a way to reduce the expenses.
