How to Buy an Engagement Ring

Have you decided to pop the all-important question to your beloved? Or are you delaying asking her because you simply don’t know if it is possible to find a stunning yet affordable engagement ring? Perhaps you and your beloved have made the decision to get married but an engagement ring just simply isn't in your household budget?

A little known secret is that there are actually many affordable engagement ring options that can help you to find the best ring for your betrothed's finger and for your budget!

1A Family Heirloom

Perhaps one of the best places to look for an engagement ring for the frugal minded person is within your own family! Now I don't mean you should go and beg grandma for her engagement ring, but to instead talk seriously with the members of your family about your budget concerns and your love and devotion for your beloved. Perhaps there is a ring that has been passed down for generations that may be perfect as an engagement ring.  A family heirloom ring, no matter how plain or ornate it is, can be an incredibly romantic gesture to the person that you are proposing to; a family heirloom proves that you are looking to include her in your family!

A serious discussion with your family can help to not just demonstrate your love and devotion for your romantic partner but it can also provide you with an opportunity to benefit from the wisdom and knowledge of weddings and marriage that your family members have! Perhaps your family can even help you to find a unique method of popping the question!

2Keep It Simple when Looking to Buy an Engagement Ring

Talk to your girlfriend and find out what her thoughts are on saving the money on an ornate engagement ring and, instead, purchasing a much more elaborate wedding band. Many brides are opting for a single band with diamonds on it as a way to keep things a bit more simple and a bit more budget friendly.

A diamond engagement ring does not need to be made up of a 4 carat diamond; a much smaller diamond, or even a sapphire surrounded by diamonds, can get the same response from your beloved when you present it to her. The ring that you offer her should not be the focal point of the proposal; your desire to spend your life with someone that you love very much is the focal point. Your love for her and the intent behind the ring is the focus!

If you and your beloved have a similar belief system and understanding of your need to be budget-conscious then the ring itself will definitely not be the focal point when you ask her to spend the rest of her life with you!

3Diamond Alternatives

While a diamond engagement ring is the traditional stone for an engagement ring, consider another option that will not only better appeal to your beloved but will also appeal to your bank account. While some people are more than willing to spend several hundred thousand dollars on a diamond engagement ring, it may be that your beloved is just as frugal-minded as you are and will be happy with a ring that does not cost more than your home does.

Does she have a favorite gemstone? Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and even pearls can make for beautiful and inexpensive engagement rings. Find out what your beloved might prefer in the way of jewelry and focus your search on rings that will appeal to her personal sense of style.

Consider purchasing a cubic zirconia for your engagement ring; you can then get the overall look of a diamond at a fraction of the price. If your bride-to-be is as frugal-minded as you are then she will not protest at being offered a cubic zirconia; after all, once there is an improvement in your financial status a few years down the line, you can always replace the cubic zirconia with a real diamond if you opt to!

4Pre-Owned Rings

While no one likes to think about the high rate of divorce, especially when you are considering your own marriage, it can prove to be beneficial to you when seeking out affordable engagement rings. There are many reputable jewelry stores that specialize in purchasing and reselling engagement rings from people who no longer have the need for their own engagement ring.

Try to avoid a visit to a pawn shop unless you are sure that is a reputable one; a pawn shop differs greatly from a reputable jewelry store that buys and resells engagement rings. Not only are most pawn shops located in less than stellar neighborhoods but they are well known for selling items that are stolen and not worth what they are being sold for. That said, if you find a pawn shop with a solid reputation for being fair and honest, then by all means check out what they currently have in inventory. You may just find the perfect discounted engagement rings from which to select.

Buying an engagement ring from online sources can prove to be a very risky endeavor; however it can also be a very budget-friendly endeavor if you use a bit of common sense combined with good business sense. Buying a ring off of eBay can be a great way to obtain a beautiful and affordable engagement ring; however, make sure that you only purchase from eBay sellers who have a good and solid reputation as being a reliable retailer. Craigslist offers you the ability to try on the ring and see it in person before you actually pay for it; however, to avoid being scammed out of your hard-earned money you should consider meeting the seller at a reputable jewelry store of your choice. Most jewelers are more than willing to appraise a piece of jewelry, usually for a small fee, in order to help you determine the value of the piece you are interested in purchasing.

Getting engaged to the person that you are in love with is a big step in your relationship; being a frugal-minded and budget-conscious person does not mean that you won’t be able to offer your beloved a stylish and elegant engagement ring to bring a smile to her face! Congratulations and best of luck on your endeavor to buy an engagement ring for your love!
