Are you interested in adopting a child? The fees involved can be a scary proposition to any adoptive family!

Understanding all of the costs involved can help you to be better prepared to welcome your new family addition.

Regardless of your reasons for choosing to go down the adoption path to expand your family, it can be both exhilarating and terrifying. In addition to the rollercoaster of emotions that you will be faced with, there is also the very real concern about the financial toll that an adoption can take on your family.

Before you embark on your journey towards adoption, it can be beneficial to have an idea of the cost of adopting a child. The better prepared you are to face the financial aspect of your adoption, the better prepared you will be to handle the potential emotional rollercoaster.

1Types of Adoptions

There are several types of adoption processes; each one has its own set of complex rules and fee structure. In order to determine what your family will be facing in terms of the cost of adopting a child, it is important that you understand how the type of adoption can affect the costs that are involved.

The cost of adopting a child will vary greatly so determine the type of adoption that will work best for your family’s financial and emotional situation.

2Foster To Adoption Programs

There are thousands of children currently in the foster care system in the United States. Very often these children are older than two years old and may even have siblings that would need to be placed with them in order to maintain the children’s sense of security and emotional stability. Of course, many infants are also placed into the foster care system; so if your preference is to foster an infant, you may be able to realize that hope.

Becoming a foster parent can prove to be an incredibly rewarding experience as you provide your foster child with the love and stability that they so richly deserve. While the goal of foster care is to provide temporary care for a child with the ultimate goal of the reunification of the family, very often children are able to be adopted by their foster parents if all parties involved feel like it is the best step for the children.

While there are initial costs, albeit low costs, involved in becoming a foster parent, the costs of adopting your foster child are often kept very low. Many states will actually pay for all of the related adoption costs in order to ensure that the children are able to have a stable and loving home.

3Domestic Adoption Versus International Adoption

Both domestic and international adoption are great choices to expand your family; however, the costs related to each can vary greatly. Both adoption options will require a home study, which can cost upwards of two thousand dollars depending on the agency that helps you to complete the process.

With international adoptions there are very often costs involved with the need to travel to the country that you are adopting your little one from. Along with airfare, hotel costs, legal and visa fees, your cost of adopting a child could include fees paid to interpreters, guides, and to orphanages. All told, depending on the country that you are adopting your little one from, you could be facing upwards of $25,000.

Domestic adoption may not include the costs related to traveling outside of the country, but there is still the potential of facing high court costs, medical costs for the birth mother, and fees paid to adoption mediators.

4Adoption Agency Versus Private Adoption

Using an adoption agency is one of the most popular routes for adoptive parents to go down. Not only will an adoption agency help you to be matched with the new member of your family, but an agency will also help to help you to navigate the often complex legalities of adoption.

Another positive aspect of using an agency is that they will also ensure that you have a good understanding of how each part of the process works. The fees involved with using an agency can quickly add up; however, you will very likely be provided a detailed list of the fees that you will be facing.

Through a private adoption, you will be facing the costs of advertising for your birth mother along with the related legal fees. While you may be able to save several thousand dollars that would have otherwise been paid to the adoption agency, you will still need to do the majority of the legwork needed to find a birth mother.

You will also need to be able to have an understanding of how the adoption process works in your state; the legal terms legalities related to parental rights can often be daunting to face. However, if finances are a concern then private adoption might just be the route to take.

5Help With the Cost Of Adopting A Child

Parents looking towards adoption as their path to expanding their family should not lose heart if finances are a major concern. Several programs are available that are designed to help with the high costs of adoption.

• Government Grants Look into available government grants to find out if your family qualifies for any of them. Government grants can be a wonderful help to a family struggling to reach the financial reality that adoption presents.

• Tax Credit The adoption tax credit could help a family with as much as $10,000 of the cost of adopting a child. Discuss any questions that you may have with a tax specialist in order to ensure that your family qualifies.

• Employer Assistance Programs Many large companies offer an assistance program that can help adoptive parents with a significant portion of the costs related to adoption. Find out if your company offers an adoption assistance program. It could help you with as much as $15,000 of the related adoption fees.

6Get a Support System

No matter which adoption option you select to expand your family, it is important that you have the support of your family and friends. The rollercoaster of adoption can leave more than a significant dent in your bank account; it can also leave you with a huge range of emotions that can prove to be overwhelming without the proper support network in place.
