The huge shift in the global economy has brought much unexpected change to many people. Whether it be the loss of a job, the loss of money, or the loss of a home, this change has fed our survival fears and lessened our sense of security
While it is easy and understandable for one to feel like a victim of unexpected change, it is essential that we learn to embrace the change for what it is, in order for us to fully grow and achieve our potential.
Here we discuss the ways in which to embrace the change in your life, no matter what situation of change you find yourself in.
1Preparing for Change
By accepting change as a natural part of life, you may find it easier to embrace the changes once they comes knocking at your door.
If you know that change is coming, you can make provisions beforehand. For example, if you are moving to a new home or starting a new job, making thorough preparations beforehand will make life a lot easier.
While you can often not predict upcoming changes in your life, you can certainly make some preparations for the unknown, for example:
- If it's within your means, having a “rainy day” savings fund could make life much easier in difficult times.
- Looking after the health of you and your family is also important. Eating healthy along with regular exercise will help to reduce unexpected illness.
- You can get all kinds of insurance to cover you in case something happens, whether it be home insurance, life insurance, health insurance or any other type of insurance.
2Perceiving Change
To effectively adapt to your life's changes, you may need to adjust your perspective on them. Each change in life comes with an opportunity. You have the opportunity to do something new, adopt a new way of thinking, learn from a mistake or grow from a particular experience. Our interpretations of why we find ourselves in a certain situation can either serve to reinforce our conviction, or to obliterate our resolve.
No matter how much suffering a person endures, it is always possible for them to convert that suffering into a lesson for future betterment, which is what putting your troubles into perspective is really all about. Read our article “How to Use the Power of Perspective” for more on this.
3Forgiving Yourself and Others
Some change is hard to accept because it brings up negative feelings such as guilt, shame, anger or regret. If this is the case with you, you may need to spend some time letting go of the past and of these negative emotions that are bringing down your self-esteem and holding you back.
Forgiveness, whether it be to yourself and/or others is important for your inner growth. Forgiving doesn't have to be painful. It can be done relatively easily through techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique or forgiveness meditations. Not only will the release of these negative emotions help you to accept and embrace change, they should also leave you feeling ”lighter” and healthier.
4Taking a Moment to Breathe
In the midst of major change, it may be hard for you to think straight and act logically. When you feel your emotions taking over and your mind losing control, take a moment to breath deeply and allow for oxygen to revitalize your energy and calm you down. Tap into the inner strength of your being and, even if for just the slightest of moments live in the now, knowing that all is well at this point in time.
You may also want to repeat an affirmation such as, “I am always calm and relaxed, my thoughts are under control,” or “I fully embrace this change and the opportunities that come with it.”
5Letting Change Happen
Once you have prepared yourself mentally and emotionally for any imminent or future changes, it is time to let go of your resistance to it and let it be. By allowing the change to happen naturally, you will feel more relaxed and at ease with the flow of life.
At times the transition of change will be tough, but stay strong and trust that there is a higher force at work. Once you can fully embrace change, you can also embrace all of the wonderful opportunities that come with it.
