Alternative Medical Practices

Alternative medical treatments are fast gaining popularity in the Healthcare industry. More and more people are turning to these alternatives and are using them fully or in combination with the conventional Western medicine options.

Not only are these alternative treatments popular for their effectiveness in helping achieve holistic treatment and natural wellness, they are also affordable to the majority of people – something that cannot be said for many conventional medicine solutions. There are different types of alternative medical practices that you can take advantage of to boost your health in a natural way and thus spare yourself of the unpleasant side effects that are known to accompany conventional medicine.

1Alternative Treatments: The Use of Herbalism

Herbalism is an alternative medical practice whereby plants and plant extracts are used to treat various ailments and to ensure that good overall health is sustained. Herbalism is actually the forerunner of the modern pharmaceutical industry. For thousands of years, traditional medical practitioners in every society around the world used different plants and plant extracts to treat patients ailing from different maladies. Many of these plants and extracts are actually still in use today having been incorporated into a variety of modern drug formulations.

Herbalists insist on the efficacy of their treatment methods and formulations with emphasis being put on the fact that these, having been naturally developed, are better for patients as compared to conventional medicine products that also contain artificial ingredients. Before using herbalism in conjunction with prescription medication you should first consult your doctor to establish if there are potential risks that can accrue from the interaction of the two.

Alternative Treatments: Acupuncture and Acupressure

These are alternative medical practices that therapeutically alleviate pain through pinpointing different parts of the body. In acupuncture the desired results are achieved through the insertion of small needles into certain parts of the body. This is an ancient practice that is based on the fact that the application of pressure to certain areas of the body is effective in relieving a variety of ailments. This is certainly an effective and affordable way to take care of nagging muscle soreness and headaches.

Acupressure is based on the same pressure application principles as acupuncture but rather than use the aforementioned small pins, the practitioners apply pressure using their hands and elbows or indeed other objects suitable for the same purpose.

Alternative Treatments: The Use of Chiropractic Medicine

Chiropractic medicine is based on the premise that one’s general health can be compromised through the nervous system in the event that the musculoskeletal system, and more specifically the spine, is experiencing a disorder of sorts. In this alternative medical practice, therefore, the practitioner achieves the desired results through spinal therapy whereby he/she uses the hands to work on the spine and the related tissues. This is a fine technique to consider for people who need to get relief from back pain and lumbago.

Alternative Treatments: Massage Therapy

The use of massage therapy as an alternative medical practice technique is based on the same fundamentals as chiropractic medicine, acupressure and acupuncture. In massage therapy the interventions made are useful in helping activate one’s parasympathetic nervous system. This activation enhances the release of serotonin and endorphins and these help the patient get improved sleep patterns and less scar tissue formation advantages. Massage therapy has been identified as a viable treatment method through which pain can be alleviated and the incident of stress-related ailments reduced.

Alternative Treatments: Reiki

This is an alternative medical practice that has its roots in Japan. In Reiki treatment the practitioner places his or her hands on or slightly above the patient aiming to facilitate the patient’s own healing reaction and response. This is a technique that people use in their pursuit for well-being and fine overall health. It is also applicable for people seeking relief from conventional medicine treatment side effects and also from ailment-related symptoms. Reiki can be practiced as a self-care treatment alternative and is therefore affordable. Alternatively people can seek this form of treatment from clinics, hospitals and other medical premises where a practitioner will offer the service. There are also some Reiki practitioners who can perform the treatment remotely, i.e., where a patient is not physically present. Reiki is applicable for people suffering from chronic pain, anxiety, HIV/AIDS, and also people experiencing cancer treatment side effects. People who have undergone surgery and are recuperating can also benefit from Reiki.

Alternative Treatments: Chinese Medicine

Chinese medicine is an alternative medical practice that offers treatment for a wide range of ailments. It is one of the four elements of traditional Chinese medicine, TCM, the others being food cures, massage and acupuncture. Chinese medicine treatments offer respite where conventional medicine has failed. A typical Chinese medicine checkup will involve an observation of one’s complexion, an examination of the tongue, and a set of questions with regards to one’s symptoms, eating habits and food preferences. Based on the information provided the doctor will make a diagnosis and advice on the treatment type to be pursued, e.g., the use of herbs, or acupuncture, and the best types of food to use.
