In today’s fast paced society noise is all around us regardless of where we live. We are bombarded by environmental noise, a wide variety of technology that creates noise, advertisers that make sure the volume is louder on the commercial because they know we leave the room, noisy work environments, metropolitan sounds, and a variety of other sources that expose us to noise and stress.
Although you may not realize it, all of these external forces can have an adverse affect on your mindset and can cause you to be stressed out without really knowing the reason why. If you constantly work in a noisy environment, you become exposed to it for so long that you don’t realize that it is affecting you. If you live in a noisy environment, this can also have the same effect after a prolonged period of time.
Regardless of where you live or where you work it is imperative that you are able to calm your mind by finding inner peace. Even if you don’t think you need it, you will be surprised at the difference in the way you feel once you start getting some quiet time to yourself. Here are a few ways that you can find peace and quiet regardless of your location.
1Create a Room in Your Home
Create a room in your home that can be labeled “your sanctuary”. When you are in the room make an agreement with the rest of your household members that you are in there to get a little time to yourself to regroup and re-energize. It has nothing to do with how you feel about the other members of your household; it is simply a human need. If it makes you feel better, create a schedule where every member of the household can use the room for finding inner peace and quiet.
If you in live the city or other type of noisy environment, there are many different materials you can obtain to soundproof the room. There are also ergonomic chairs you can buy that have surround sound where you can sit in the chair and listen to a new age recording that has sounds of the ocean or other outdoor venue.
2Noise Reduction Headphones
There is a wide selection of noise reducing headphones that you can purchase at a relatively affordable price that will help to block out noise and provide you with some peace and quiet. You can also obtain noise reduction items such as earplugs that you can use while you sleep or in any noisy environment that seems to stress you out.
3Finding Inner Peace through Outdoor Activities
If you love the outdoors, make it a point to schedule camping trips, hikes, regular daily walks, or any other activity that places you in the great outdoors. There are many locations where there is complete silence away from traffic sounds and other environmental sounds. You have heard of the term, “Silence is deafening”. Well this is true in some locations in the great outdoors.
4Get Up Early in the Morning
Make a point of being the first one to get up in the morning. The environment tends to be peaceful and quiet in the early morning hours before the rest of the world gets out of bed. Even if you live in a metropolitan area the mornings are significantly quieter than any other time of day.
5Practice Religion
If you are a religious person there is always a place in your church where you can find peace and quiet to be alone and regroup, pray, or whatever else your particular religion entails. Also, some religious programs offer the opportunity for you to go on retreat and although there are other people there, everyone is aware of why they are there and they will respect your need for peace and quiet. People of certain religions also set up some kind of sanctuary in their home where they can quiet their mind and renew.
6Protect Yourself at Work
If you work in a noisy environment on a daily basis this not only affects your mindset it can also take its toll on your hearing as well. For example, if you work in an industrial area that is constantly noisy or other type of environment that tends to produce a lot of noise, prolonged exposure to noise can have an effect on your health both mentally and physically. Make it a practice to wear ear plugs or noise canceling headphones while you work if your employer does not provide this type of equipment.
7Take Long Hot Baths
Make it part of your “me” time to take long hot bubble baths with aromatherapy and soft lighting. If you live in the city listen to some new age recordings that have sounds of nature such as waterfalls or some other type of soothing sound. Make it clear to others in your household that you are not to be disturbed unless it is a dire emergency.
