Setting goals is something that just about every successful person will tell you has been a key part of their success. Without setting and attaining realistic goals, people would just be floating around aimlessly without any idea as to what they should be doing next!
Whether your goals are related to dropping those last 10 lbs or opening your own bakery, the steps towards achieving those goals are the same and should be followed if you want to achieve your own personal or professional success.
1Do It Now!
Don’t put off the setting of your goals until tomorrow, or next week, or next month! Do it now! Set your goals today, right now. The more that you procrastinate in setting your goals the harder you will find it is to actually achieve those goals. Once you are ready to start working on the process; let procrastination be a thing of the past – there is definitely no room for it in your future!
2Pledge To Yourself
Just saying that you’re going to set goals and set them is pretty easy to go, once you’ve jumped over the procrastination hurdle. Your next challenge is going to be retraining your mindset to accept and to believe that you will stick to your goals – no matter what obstacles might fall across your path. Pledge to yourself that you will stick to your goals, no matter what, until they have been accomplished in full.
3Jotting Them Down
Do you have a blog? Do you write in a journal? Writing your goals down can help to make them a lot more real to you. Perhaps if one of your new goals is to develop a healthier lifestyle, you can tape a piece of paper with your goals written on it to your fridge or your pantry door. This will help to serve as a reminder every time that you are tempted to fall off the goal-setting train.
By having your goals written down in a place where you will be able to refer to them on a daily basis can truly prove to be beneficial, especially on those days where you feel like you are about to fall off of the goal-wagon and head straight into a bag of potato chips.
4Prioritize Your Life
While buying a home is certainly a great goal to set, it just may not be a realistic goal for you right now based on your current situation. Make it one of your long-term goals, absolutely, but work on short-term goals that can help you to be in a better position financially. For example, you should have a steady job with a steady income, you should have a good savings account, and you should have decent credit. The more that you prioritize your goals to suit your current life and lifestyle the more realistic it is for you to actually attain those larger goals.5Setting the Steps
Once you have determined what both your short-term and your long-term goals are, you can start to work out the necessary steps to accomplish them. Certainly, you should ensure that your current lifestyle will support working toward your goals, but beyond that you need to work out which method is going to be the best one.
Is your goal to land a new job? Then you should beef up your resume, write customizable cover letters, sign up with every job website and recruitment agency that you can find – and you should work tirelessly to reach your goal of new employment!
The same holds true no matter what your goals are – determine not just the what but the how – the how of how you are going to reach for and attain those goals.
6Getting Support
No matter how goal-oriented you are, the truth is that the majority of people find that reaching their goals is a lot smoother if they have a good support system in place. Perhaps joining a support group for people who have similar goals would help. Another idea is reaching out to friends or family members who have had similar goals.
The more support that you have during the process the more likely you are to actually reach those goals because you have someone that you are being held accountable to.
7Go Easy On Yourself
We are our own worst critics! With this in mind, it is easy to see how we can be downright cruel to ourselves if we are stumbling along the path of reaching our goals. If you stumble, or fall off of the goal-setting wagon you should never give up hope or faith in yourself. Every single human stumbles along the pathway towards attaining goals - cut yourself a little bit of slack, recognize the stumble for what it is and ensure that you can get right back on track to hitting those goals!
Getting back on track can certainly prove to be a challenge for even the most determined goal-setter; however, if you have your support system in place and you also have your mind set in the right place then you will be able to get right back up and keep on forging on to meet your goals.
Don’t be afraid to lean on the members of your support team when you need them – that is what they are there for! There are pretty good odds, also, that at least one member of your support team knows what it feels like to stumble along the way and they may be able to provide you with a list of tips to help you get back on the goal-attaining horse!
