Holiday Jobs for Students

If you are a teen or a college student you might be looking to earn some money by holding a seasonal job during the winter break. This is all good not only because you’ll be able to have some cash to spend but also because you will gain valuable benefits and experience.

There are many holiday jobs for students that you can consider and the good thing about these is that most don’t require you to have prior experience or training – you just have to learn on the job. Below are some of the best winter break gigs that you can consider:

1Holiday Jobs for Students: Working as a Babysitter or Nanny

During the winter a lot of couples continue with their regular work schedules and for those with young children this means that the kids still have to be taken to day-care or camps in the case of slightly older kids. Some couples actually prefer hiring nannies or babysitters instead of the aforementioned options and this presents a winter break job opportunity for students if only for a few weeks. Working as a babysitter can be quite an interesting way to relax after a busy school term especially if the kid(s) under your care are easygoing and cooperative.

2Holiday Jobs for Students: Working at the Mall

If there was ever a fun location to secure a winter break job it must be at the mall. The many retail stores at these facilities do hire lots of seasonal employees and if you are a college student you really have a good chance of landing a job. There are lots of perks that come with such jobs, the first and foremost one being that malls are typical hangout locations for lots of young adults and as such meeting and making new friends is quite easy. Working such a job might see you get to enjoy various store discounts and these will definitely prove very handy when you need to do some personal shopping. Performing to your best abilities might see you get the same job the following winter but in case this doesn’t happen you will still have gained some actual job experience.

3Holiday Jobs for Students: Working in a Fast Food Restaurant

Finding a winter break job in a fast food restaurant is usually pretty easy given that most of these establishments enjoy increased business since lots of people are out shopping and generally having a jolly holiday time. The idea of working in these restaurants does not top many students’ lists, possibly due to the fact they may have to don some funny attire (which doesn’t apply for all restaurants), but there are a number of perks that can be enjoyed. If you are lucky enough to find an understanding boss and helpful employees your winter break job shouldn’t be so bad. It will be even better if free food is one of the perks on offer.

4Holiday Jobs for Students: Working at a Toy Store

In childhood many of us wished that the local toy store was home. Though these thoughts ended up becoming mere pipe dreams, holding a job in a toy store might just be the closest way of making such wishes ‘real’. During the winter break, toy stores enjoy lots of shoppers’ traffic and this often prompts them to open up earlier and/or close later than usual. Well, working in such a place during the holiday season is bound to be quite hectic and you won’t be able to enjoy playing with the toys as much as you would have loved to but at least you can take delight in helping the kids have a great time as they shop.

5Holiday Jobs for Students: Working at Holiday Events

There are usually lots of holiday events being organized and hosted by different organizations and it is usually the case that these require temporary employees. One of the examples that come to mind is whereby local authorities organize various city events and celebrations during the holidays and to get things done they normally hire extra hands as add-ons to their current crew. College students and teens can take up various positions in this regard including parking arrangement jobs, helping with event set ups, and assisting event coordinators. Such jobs could be quite fun and interesting.

6Holiday Jobs for Students: Snow Removal

The good thing about offering a snow removal service is that you don’t have to be employed – you can be your own boss and in some cases become an employer. Such a job can be organized around your neighborhood where you can have local residents pay you to remove snow from their sidewalks and driveways. Getting started may only require that you and your crew have a couple of shovels and lots of elbow grease. It won’t be easy but with lots of motivation and good cheer you can make some good money especially if Mother Nature decides to be generous with the snow.

7Holiday Jobs for Students: Working as a Camp Counselor

During winter breaks it is the norm for lots of childcare centers to organize camps for children under their care. Doing so often requires them to supplement their staff numbers and this makes for a good job opportunity for interested teens and college students, more so those who enjoy working with kids. Holding such a job will mostly involve you working as a chaperon during field trips and so on, which might be quite enjoyable if the kids don’t give you a hard time – you should therefore establish the number and ages of the children, as well as their behaviors, before you take up such positions. In terms of compensation you might be offered a flat fee while other camps will pay you hourly.

8Additional Holiday Jobs to Consider

In addition to the mentioned jobs there also are opportunities to work as seasonal baggers, cashiers and stockers in grocery and drugs stores, working as wrappers in retail stores to wrap gifts, working for one of the shipping companies like UPS or FedEx to help with holiday deliveries, etc. All of these positions will pay some useful money in wages, not forgetting the possible tips.
