Tips for Saving Money on Home Expenses

- Refinance your mortgage. With the incredibly low interest rates, you can end up saving close to $2,000 a year by refinancing. Check out this page on Yahoo to calculate your potential savings.

Fluorescent Light Bulb- Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs in your house and save $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

-
Lower the temperature on your hot water heater to between 110 and 120 degrees. You don't really need it any hotter than that and you can save $20-$40 a year doing so.

- Pay close attention to your
thermostat. Each extra degree in winter can increase heating costs by 3%. And in the summer, each degree can raise the cost by 6%!

- Use your oven instead of your microwave as often as possible and save up to 50% in energy costs for cooking.

- Hold off on doing laundry until you have full loads. Several small loads end up using more water than a one or two big loads. You could save up to $125 a year depending on your situation.

- Stick to basic phone services, if you have a land line. Call waiting and call forwarding are not necessary and they can almost double your costs for phone services.

Cable TV- Getting rid of cable can save you up to $600 a year but if that is too drastic of a move for you, just switch to basic cable and still save up to $400 a year.
