how to become a chef

Do you have a passion for food and for cooking? If so then you may have been considering a career as a chef.

Learning how to become a chef can often be unclear unless you take the time to research what is needed in order to prep yourself for your future. This quick guide will not just help to point you into the right direction but will also help you to determine your career focus.

How To Select A Chef Training Facility

For an aspiring chef there are many culinary schools that can provide them with the training that they need in order to learn how to become a chef.

While it may be possible to find an entry level kitchen position, perhaps as an apprentice within a well-rated restaurant, the reality is that an aspiring chef is much more likely to land a great job cooking if they have had professional training in commercial food preparation. That will have familiarized them with the ins and outs of the restaurant industry.

Without professional training, you may find yourself needing to work your way up the ranks within the kitchen – which can definitely set your career goals behind significantly.

The key is to find one that is not just within your allotted budget but it is also a well-rated and reputable culinary school that can provide you with all of the training that you need in order to successfully become a chef.

There are several types of culinary programs available – including those available at vocational schools and universities. The type of program that you select will greatly depend on your career goals, your available financial aid, and the amount of time that you are willing to invest in your career as a chef.

Before you make a decision on a culinary school, you should carefully evaluate their curriculum so that you can ensure that it meshes with your career goals. If you attend a school that doesn’t offer, for example, pastry classes, you may find that it will create obstacles once you are trying to obtain a full-time chef position. A well-trained chef should be able to handle all areas of the kitchen, from service prep to the successful creation of all of the dishes that the restaurant may serve.

Keep in mind that a well-ranked culinary school will also include teaching the ins and outs of successful kitchen management. This will also include the effective management of kitchen staff and giving you an understanding of local health codes. These are both important components in learning how to become a chef.

Consider An Apprentice Position

Do a little bit of research into highly-rated restaurants and hotels that you are interested in working at. Many of them offer their trainee chefs an extensive apprentice training program that can help to provide them with the types of education, training and experience that they need in order to succeed. The hotels may require that the trainees they are investing money and time in sign a minimum of a two-year employment contract. Be sure to read any of the fine print that may affect your career aspirations.

How To Become a Chef - The Curriculum

Before you enter into a culinary arts program there are several things that you should be aware of in order to ensure that you are thoroughly prepared for what is ahead of you in terms of training and once you launch your career as a well-trained chef.

While you are learning how to become a chef, there is no doubt that you will learn a significant amount of information; while every curriculum will differ slightly, you can expect to learn the following.

  • The preparation of the food that you will be serving is one of the most important things that you can learn. From learning how to slice and dice with the best of them to learning everything there is to know about food safety and ensuring that you don’t inadvertently poison one of the restaurant patrons with the mishandling of the food that you are serving to them.
  • There is more to being a chef than simply knowing how to prepare excellent meals. There is a lot of work that needs to go into the planning of the menu, ordering supplies that will meet restaurant demand without the risk of running low on supplies – or the risk of having more product in stock than you will actually need before it spoils. A skilled and well-trained chef will be able to effectively manage their kitchen’s stock to the benefit of the restaurant and their customers.
  • Learning how to care for and successfully sanitize the kitchen and all of the equipment used within the kitchen is another very important part of ensuring that the kitchen you are running is operating as smoothly as is possible. Your employers and your patrons will expect that the kitchen is producing the highest quality food that is prepared in a clean kitchen, so it is important that you learn how to do your part.
An important reason that aspiring chefs need to learn every part of successfully running a kitchen is because that the basics will rarely vary from kitchen to kitchen and from specialty to specialty. If you determine that being a top-notch pastry chef is the path for you then you will have all of the necessary skills that are needed to shift your career focus onto the pastry path.
Knowing what will be expected from you in terms of your performance is another very valuable lesson for any aspiring chef to learn.
Not only will you be required to think on your feet but you will also be required to spend an extensive amount of time on your feet. You may spend as many as 18 hours on your feet during the course of a shift so while comfortable shoes are a must, physical fitness is another consideration.
Physical fitness will extend beyond the need to stand on your feet for an extend amount of time; it will also extend to the need to lift and move oftentimes heavy boxes and equipment. If you are unable to lift at least 50lbs then you may find it difficult to perform some of your job duties.

Conclusion

Learning how to become a chef is not for everyone. No much how much you love to cook; being a chef takes a great deal of dedication along with the much-needed passion for food. You will also need to have a willingness to continually expand your knowledge of food trends so that you can remain on the cutting edge of what your customers enjoy!
