get out of a rut

Do you feel like your life is stuck on auto-pilot and you aren’t really taking part in it? Find out some easy ways to start enjoying life with a quick jump start.

Patterns and routines are good for you. In fact, when you develop routines based upon the things you have to accomplish each day, they make it easier to manage your life.

However, once in a while your life can be flooded with so many of the same patterns that you feel like you’re stuck. You get up, take the same route to work, talk to the same people, eat the same type of food, go home, watch the same tv shows, go to bed and then you get up the next day and do it again. It’s almost like you’re on auto-pilot and not even taking part in your own life.

Listed below are a few of the things that you can try in order to break out of a rut and get back to enjoying your life. Most of them are just about trying something new. You don’t have to completely change your life, just try one thing that you haven’t made time for in a long time.

1Make New Friends

A lot of people develop close friendships and then stop looking for new friends, even though you probably don’t realize it.

You just get so busy with your life that you stop making it a priority. Don’t be afraid of being more open to new friends.

Take a few minutes when you’re at the gym to talk to someone new. Go to lunch with someone from work you don’t know very well. Maybe you won’t develop a new friendship, but just taking the plunge might be enough to get you off of auto-pilot.

2Start a New Diet

This doesn’t have to be a diet that is focused on weight loss. Maybe all you need to do is try a new type of food that you’ve never had. If you’re a “meat and potatoes” eater, try eating as a vegetarian for a week, etc. If you usually eat a lot of take out, buy a new cookbook and experiment in your own kitchen.

3Travel Away From Your Hometown

Maybe you feel like you’re in a rut because all of the different activities that you take part in are in the same area. It’s all the same groups of people doing the same types of activities.

Instead of spending your weekend on the same activities, take a weekend trip to another city to see what they have to offer.

You can research your destination online to identify the activities you want to take part in while you’re there. Another option is to book a hotel and then start talking to the locals to see what recommendations they would make.

4Join a New Group

Joining a new group is a great way to break out of your old patterns. These days there are groups for just about anything that you find interesting. Joining a new group can also be a great way to meet new people.

This is especially true if you are someone who feels awkward when you meet new people because you can’t think of anything to say. When you join a group that is focused on a topic you are interested in, you will already know that you have something in common that you can talk about with your new acquaintances.

The internet makes this easier than ever to find people who share your interests. Just do a search for whatever topic you are interested in, followed by the word “forum”. i.e. dog training forum, book club forum, science fiction forum.

A great resource is the website Another option is to check with your local library or chamber of commerce to see what local groups there are that you may be interested in.
