Failure is a part of life. When a person fails, they usually don't want to think about it, but that is a mistake. Learn why failure is actually a tremendous opportunity and how you can take advantage of it.
No one likes to fail. The reality is that whenever we try to do something in life, we are seeking success, not failure. However, failure is a simple fact of life and one that each person needs to accept and embrace. When you take lessons from failure, rather than walking away feeling defeated, then you will improve the chances of your future success.
In this article you will:
- Learn that failure is a natural part of life
- Understand how to view failure properly
- Begin to ask questions of your failures
- Find success through your failures
When you suffer a failure, the first thing that you need to do is not take it personally. It is not a testament to your intelligence, ability, talent, skill, or anything else in your life. It is an opportunity to learn and grow as an individual.
Learning From Failure
For example, when a child begins to learn to ride a bicycle, he or she doesn’t generally sit down, pedal, and ride down the street.
They begin by teetering, wobbling, and falling down. With their parents encouraging them, they begin to learn and to realize what they were doing that caused their failure.
Each time the child falls, and even if he or she gets hurt, a new lesson is learned, whether he or she realizes it.
Ask Questions and Seek Themes From Your Failures
Often we tend to repeat the same types of mistakes. Even when we do something wrong that caused us to fail, we turn around and do that again. This is when you have to seek out the themes from your failures.
Is there something that you are doing that tends to bring failure to you? Is there something consistent that you could begin to change that will help bring about different results?
Below are some great questions to help you learn valuable lessons from failure.
1. What can you learn from this experience?
It can be challenging to take responsibility when something goes wrong. People tend to want to lay blame on other people, partly because we are afraid of the repercussions, but also because we want to feel better about ourselves. However, if you don’t learn from a failure, then you are destined to repeat it again.
No matter what kind of failure you experienced, ask yourself what you can learn from it. This is not only a great way to reduce your chances of failure in the future, but it is a great way to change your mindset.
2. How can you improve yourself?
Based on the experience that you have had, what things can you do that will help you improve? Are there any skills that could be improved? Could you take courses and learn something new to help accomplish your goals in the future? Look for the deficiencies that you exhibited in your effort. While you make this evaluation, though, do not put yourself down (saying, ‘I’m just not smart enough,’ etc.). Stay positive and honest with your effort.
3. Did anyone else witness either your effort or the failure?
If so, then try talking to them to find out what you could have done different, or better, that might lead to a better result in the future.
When an athlete loses a match or a game, they will go to the film room and dissect what went wrong, why, and how they can improve upon their performance.
You may know that you are more skilled or talented than someone else, but still fail in their presence or against them.
Why is this? Do you work differently when facing them? Do you tend to back off for fear of success?
There are numerous reasons why people fail, and when they don’t take the time to evaluate the process, they are only cheating themselves of the opportunity to be successful in the future.
Summary
Failure is often viewed in our modern society as a negative aspect of life. In reality, though you can use it to work on your skills and change your approach to improve. That is what will lead to success later on.
Michael Jordan, in a famous Nike commercial, once stated, ‘I have failed over and over again in my life … and that is why I succeed.’ Arguably the greatest professional basketball player in history embraced failure, but people only remember his successes.
View failure as a learning experience and you will take all of the best lessons from failure and turn them into your personal success story in the future.
