Although the internet is full of a ton of information, it’s sometimes difficult to separate the good info from the bad stuff. Learn the tips that will help you make this important distinction.
Here at Survival Insight, we put a lot of effort into providing you with quality information that will help you through times when you may be struggling financially. Whenever possible, we try to give you good resources that you can use to get additional information.
However, there are probably times when you need to do additional research to help solve your problems. When that happens, it can be really difficult to determine what information is quality and can help you from the information that will only cause you further problems.
This article focuses on helping you to understand why so much of the information you find online isn’t the best quality. A follow up article will focus on exactly how you can find sources online that are quality and can be really helpful to you.
Here are many of the reasons for some of the poor content on the internet.
1Why There Is So Much Bad Information Online
The online world these days is much different than it was only a few short years ago and there are three reasons for this.
- Old information
- Marketing information
- Bad information
2Old Information
Depending upon the topic you’re researching, this may or may not be an issue for you. If the topic you are is something that may have changed over time, you should be very aware of how old the information is that you are looking at.
Medical information can become outdated, economic conditions change, products are recalled or better solutions are developed. The information may have been correct when it was originally published, but that doesn’t mean it is still relevant “today”.
3Marketing Information
In the beginning of the internet explosion, you could search for something, read the material and pretty much know that it was true. However, that was before the internet began being used as a marketing tool.
Today, any kind of a product or service that you may be considering is being sold by the source company, but it is also probably being sold by an affiliate as well. Affiliates make money if you purchase the product from them.
Because of that, they build websites that only talk about how great the product is and those sites are only designed to sell. Usually sites like these exaggerate a great deal and sometimes are just full of information that is not true.
4Bad Information
The really great thing about the internet is that anyone can buy a domain name and put up a website. However, that’s the bad part of the internet too. ANYBODY can create a website, write their own content and get it published.
The quality sites provide you with valuable and accurate information that can help inform your decisions. However, poor quality sites can provide you with information that is completely made up.
There are a lot of people out there who are publishing content for the sole purpose of getting a backlink to one of their other websites. When they do this, they don’t really care if the articles they are publishing are accurate or not. You need to learn to identify the difference between good information and bad information.
5Don’t Believe the Headlines
If you are searching for a product or service that makes promises in the headline, be very careful. This is especially true if the headline gives you specific numbers for the success you can expect from a particular product. In most cases, those numbers are very outdated, which means you cannot expect to see the same results.
6Conclusion
The internet is still the best place to do research on products and services before you buy them. However, you just need to understand that you can’t believe everything you read.
One of our next articles will tell you how to find resources online that you can trust. It’s pretty easy to tell the difference between sites that you can trust and sites that you should avoid, once you know what to look for.
