questions and answers for an interview

Remaining calm, cool, and composed is one of the ingredients to a successful job interview. One of the most effective ways to have confidence is knowing what to expect when you step into that interview room.

Interviews can make the most confident person in the world tense, which makes it difficult to impress your interviewer.

The last thing that you want to endure is being surprised by questions that you are unprepared to answer. When you know the basic, most common questions and answers for an interview ahead of time, then you can walk into that meeting with more confidence, giving yourself a better chance at landing the job.

This article will help you understand:

  • The most common interview questions
  • Why you’re being asked them
  • How best to answer them the interview questions

Below are several of the most common questions and answers for an interview.

1Tell Me About Yourself

This question is so general and basic that it tends to trip up many applicants.

You don’t want to give your entire life story here. The last thing the interviewer wants is to know about your bout with pneumonia when you were ten.

The interviewer is looking to gain a sense of your personality. Talk about some of the things you enjoy, such as hobbies, sports, or music.

2Why Did You Leave Your Last Job?

This question often trips many applicants up. They feel that if they are honest, it will reflect upon them in a negative light. However, trying to be evasive will lead to the interviewer to wonder why you can’t simply give a straightforward and honest answer.

While the last thing any person wants to do is offer something negative, there are plenty of ways to turn a negative into a positive. If you were fired, and it was over something that you can control (a mistake, for example), tell them this up front and also show them how you learned from the experience.

Whatever you do, though, don’t merely state that you were restless and wanted to try something new. Let them know that you are driven, dedicated, and willing to learn something new.

3Why Do You Want to Work Here?

This question is not looking to discover what you think about the company, but rather what you know about it. This interviewer wants to know that you have taken the opportunity to learn something about the company, its mission, goals, and that it falls in line with your own.

"I like the pay range" is not an answer that will get you a second interview.

4What Are Your Strengths?

Most applicants do not like this question because they are afraid of coming across as arrogant.

Others will have a difficult time discussing the things that they do well to someone who is evaluating them.

Stay positive and don’t shy away from the aspects of your work ethic that shine.

If you are great communicator, then say this. If you are an exceptional leader, highlight that with examples.

The only thing you don’t want to do is go on and on about yourself. This question is only supposed to highlight your strengths as they relate to your working life.

Summary

When you have questions and answers for an interview already in mind, then you will be able to approach it with a little more confidence and ease. By having that level of confidence, it will allow you to appear comfortable and in control. That is what they are looking for the most with some of these most common questions and answers for an interview.
