In this article, you will learn:
- What a reboot is
- Why it’s important
- Tips and techniques to reboot yourself
What is a Reboot?
Most people are familiar with a computer reboot. That is when you shut down the computer, give it a small break and turn it back on.
This is necessary because you put a lot of stress on the memory and files of the computer when you open and read files, play games, send emails, surf the internet, etc. every day.
If you don’t turn it off once in a while, you will begin to notice that it slows down its operations, some programs begin to crash, and you are not getting the most efficient use out of it. A reboot lets the computer start over with a clean slate.
Your mind works in a similar fashion.
The human brain is the most intricate and complicated piece of machinery ever designed and while it has its own natural abilities to reset and clear out old, useless information and stresses, sometimes it needs a little help as well.
You need to take the time and make the effort to truly reboot yourself and your life.
Why a Reboot is Important
Have you ever felt the overwhelming need to simply ‘get away’ from everything and everyone around you? At some point in our life, and often many times, we reach a breaking point when we feel as though we simply cannot break free of the stress and pressures that are mounting all around us.
We begin to have a shorter temper, we tend to snap at the people who mean the most to us, and we often become easily frustrated with everyday, ordinary tasks that were once considered simple.
It is like being in a bad relationship. While you may have feelings for the other person, at some point you realize that you are not in love, or you’re not happy, but you stick with it because maybe you don’t believe you can do better or deserve better. The reboot allows you to clear out all those extraneous thoughts and get down to the truth that often lies out there in the open, even though we can’t see it.
How to Reboot Yourself
1 - Step Away
The first thing you need to do in order to reboot yourself and your life is to step away from whatever is causing you pain, heartache, frustration, or anxiety. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed with work, home life, friends, or within some other situation, stepping away from it all is important to your rebooting process.
Take a day off from work, even if it’s not planned. Call in sick and don’t think about anything to do with work. Tell your family and friends that you are going out for the day and do something that you enjoy.
2 - Rest
Once you have temporarily removed yourself from the situation, take a little time to rest and do something you enjoy. Whether it’s heading to the mall to window shop, or going to a spa for a nice massage, take the day to focus on you.
When you reboot your computer, it doesn't instantly shut down and turn back on. It has to take a few minutes to clear out and shut down all of the old files. Then it turns back on and re-opens many of those same files with a fresh start to prepare your computer for use.
Give yourself time to let go of the old stuff so when you are ready to re-enter, it will be with a fresh perspective.
3 - Recognize
Once you have had this time to step back, and unwind, you need to recognize what is in your life that caused you to need the reboot in the first place. Some things we simply cannot escape, such as taking care of children and bills. However, how you approach these things can change your perspective on them.
If your spouse isn’t helping with housework and you are feeling overwhelmed when you come home from work, talk to him or her about it. Have your kids step up a little if they are old enough. If something about your work life is causing you anxiety regularly, discuss it with your boss.
4 - Take Care Of Yourself
Perhaps the most important aspect of rebooting yourself is to accept that you are the most important asset in your life and when you don’t take care of yourself, the challenges that you face will become great over time.
Everyone needs a little reboot now and then (just like your computer). Take the time for yourself to do this, because you are worth it.
However, if you find yourself needing these short, little breaks too often, there may be larger problems that you need to address.Summary
The next time that you feel that life is becoming too much to handle, take a step back, do something that will help you relax and unwind, and then think about your life in all its challenges and glory. When you reboot your life, you get a fresh perspective and you can see the endless possibilities open to you.
