How to Start a Call Center

Are you one of those people that fancy running a successful business from home? Do you think that you possess impeccable over-the-phone skills? Well, if your answer to both these questions is positive then you might just be the person who can successfully run a call center from home.

A home-based call center is also known as a virtual call center. By definition, this is an entrepreneurial venture that offers its services to businesses that outsource their sales, customer service, or support division telephone calls on a contractual basis. This type of arrangement works both ways in that the contracting company is spared the need to hire a full-time employee and the call center owner gets to work from the comfort of his or her home. The following are the requirements and issues that must be taken care of if such a venture is to take off without a snag:

1Conduct Thorough Research First

The first step to take when you start a call center from home is to have in place a solid business plan, the main aim of which is to carry out thorough research on how this business will be run once it takes off. One of the most vital considerations that you’ll have to adhere to is about finding a quiet and serene space within your home that can be used as your center of operations. This is a basic requirement for many prospective clients in that some are quite particular as to insist that their contractors have lockable rooms if only to avoid any characteristic home noises especially from children, the TV, etc.

2Basic Infrastructure Needed to Start a Call Center

There isn’t too much that is required in terms of equipment. A home-based call center will often consist of a computer, internet connection, a dedicated landline telephone, and a headset if need be. Some home call centers are now making use of Skype which is freely downloaded and can be used to make free calls to other Skype users. Using Skype to make or to receive calls from regular telephone lines does cost money though and you’ll have to top up your account with credits in order to do this.

Obtaining these equipments should go hand in hand with securing the requisite licences and permits. It is also of the essence to find the contact details for skilled technicians just in case you need help with any technical hiccups.

3Where Do You Find Clients?

After you have met all the prerequisites to start a call center the next step is to find a number of clients. Finding companies that require this service has become quite easy in recent times as many firms have taken to outsourcing their marketing or customer service requirements – you can make online searches for such or alternatively check the local dailies for information. In making your searches you should however be wary of possible scams deals that may curtail your progress even before you get started. Always deal directly with prospective clients and this after confirming their identities thoroughly.

4Issues about Contractual Agreements with Clients

Once you’ve secured a client or clients that you’d like to work with you should go ahead and make contractual agreements with them. These agreements should basically define a number of fundamental issues including the number of hours that the call center is supposed to be in operation and the basis on which payments for services provided will be done – maybe hourly, or depending on the customer type, or even based on the nature of the call. Different terms of negotiation may be required for different companies. Later as the call center grows and you need to find new clients you can think of creating a website on which you can showcase your business’ services.

5Typical Operations for a Home-Based Call Center Owner

The day to day operations of a virtual call center are really determined by the type of facility you operate. Some call centers are operated through the night while some serve daytime clients. Your hours of operation will be informed by your preferences as well as those of the client. The nature of the calls you make will be determined by the clients’ requirements and these will then require you to have the necessary telephone skills so as to handle them effectively. At the end of your business hours you’ll need to log your phone calls or hours so as to have an accurate picture of the payment due to you.

6Personal Qualifications You Need to Start a Call Center

Before starting off you should be personally satisfied that you can manage the basic essence of providing this service, i.e., you should be a good communicator. In this regard your voice on the telephone must be pleasant enough to anyone on the opposite end and your manner of speaking should be very articulate and clear. People who can naturally establish a good speaking rapport with others are suitably placed for this job.

7The Advantages of Running Your Own Call Center from Home

  • Like other self-employed ventures you get to determine your working hours.
  • You get to work from home.
  • There is a sufficient potential for profit depending on the volume and type of calls you make.
  • You can expand the business and hire people to handle the extra workload .

8The Disadvantages of Running this Business

  • If you are not able to make or receive calls in absolute peace and quiet, you could lose your business clients.
  • Some clients may require you to go for some training in order to serve their customers best, although this isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you manage to secure such clients.
