Food banks require help with the collection of food items from people or organizations which have made donations of the same. The food donations collected need to be inventoried and this is another area in which you can help. Last but not least, the food needs to be distributed to those who need it.

2Volunteering Opportunities in a Large City

Large cities teem with volunteering projects that you can help with if you have the requisite skills and knowledge. All you need to do is to call the concerned authorities and ask how to volunteer. Most of the activities you can participate in are meant to appeal to the positive ideals of the city residents; ideals of goodwill to say the least. If you have artistic skills you can volunteer to decorate various public spaces. You can paint murals, paint playground equipment including swing sets, see-saws, etc. Alternatively, you can offer to repair similar equipment that has succumbed to wear and tear.

Other ideas here can involve public outdoor areas and parks. In these facilities you can do some landscape gardening, you can help with trash collection, you can help with park-trail construction and upkeep, etc.

There are many ways to start helping with animal issues and there are similarly many organizations you can work with in different capacities to champion the rights of animals. You can start at the local branch of your humane society and offer to clean the facilities where these animals are kept. You can also volunteer to adopt a cat or dog, to walk dogs, ride horses, etc. Volunteer work in this area can also involve you providing humane education or assisting with office work. You can join activist networks that seek to help pass animal protection legislation.

4Helping with Tutoring and Mentoring

In urban areas there are a lot of schools that lack enough human resources to teach the children effectively. If you have the knowledge and spare time to offer your help you can offer to tutor students in a subject of your choice. This can be done physically or even remotely through online programs. Not only can you help students in conventional schools but you can do the same for students that live in various shelters.

5Helping with Adult Literacy

This is a great way to volunteer your services because there is so much that each of us can do with the acquisition of this vital skill. You can offer to help children and/or adults learn how to read and write – the literacy program in your locale will provide information on where you can provide your service. The same assistance can be given to illiterate inmates in various jails and prisons. You will find a lot of people who need your help in these facilities, especially because there is a high linkage between crime and illiteracy. Another related way to start helping others is by collecting then distributing textbooks and novels to people in correction facilities, to libraries, and to street families.  There are many local volunteer opportunities that you can seek out.

6Volunteer with Kids

There are a lot of less-fortunate children in our society, through no mistakes of their own. There are many children who have been forced to live on the streets because of poverty, dysfunctional homes, violent parents, abandonment, natural disasters, etc. Many children live in hospices because they suffer from different forms of cancer. There are many disabled children in various institutions for the deaf, the blind, the mentally handicapped, etc. All these children yearn to have the same fun that other kids of their age experience daily, albeit for a day or two. The many homeless people that live on the streets can find some assistance in various homeless shelters. Visiting such shelters is another way you can start helping out with various activities including the preparation and distribution of meals, collecting and distributing clothes, etc.
