How many times have you heard the phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”? They say it because it’s true. But do you know why?

 


A previous article about how to be healthy talked about how one of the best ways to improve the quality of your life and be happier is to improve your health. One of the best ways to improve your health is to eat a good breakfast.

Starting each day with a good breakfast has several very specific health benefits for you.

1Better Mental Functioning With a Good Breakfast

Children perform better on tests with a good breakfast so it stands to reason that you will get the same benefit.

Other studies have proven that breakfast improves your concentration, makes you better able to solve problems and can even improve your memory and put you in a better mood.

Do you want to be at the top of your game at work each morning, or do you want to be sluggish and slow?

Why is breakfast important? It makes you smarter.

2Control Hunger

If you skip breakfast, or have a poor one, chances are that you will be hungry before it’s time for lunch. That usually means a trip to the vending machine for a mid-morning snack that is high in fat and sodium… and not good for your health.

Why is breakfast important? It keeps you from wanting as much junk food.

3Get the RDA Recommended Vitamins and Minerals

You know how important it is to meet the RDA guidelines for vitamins and minerals each day. Skipping breakfast almost guarantees that you won’t be able to meet those requirements. It’s simply too hard to make up the nutrients you miss out on by skipping breakfast.

Why is breakfast important? It gives you more vitamins and minerals.

4Better Weight Control From Eating a Good Breakfast

Starting each day off with a good breakfast is also an effective weight control technique. It starts your metabolism off so you start burning calories sooner, and keeps you from reaching for mid-morning snacks.

It’s also been proven that people who eat a good breakfast consume fewer calories throughout the day. The makeup of those calories usually includes more vitamins and minerals and less cholesterol and fat.

Why is breakfast important? It makes you naturally make better food choices for the rest of the day.


5The Ideal Breakfast

In a perfect world, your breakfast should include at least one item from each of these groups:

  • Bread and grain (toast, whole grain cereal, etc)
  • Dairy products (low-fat milk, low-fat yogurt, eggs, etc)
  • Fruit or vegetable (bananas, apples, carrots, etc)

 

The biggest reason that people sometimes fail to eat a good breakfast is that they don’t think they have enough time in the morning. However, it isn’t really about time, it’s about planning. If you plan ahead for your breakfast, it should only take a couple of minutes. You have a couple of minutes a day to improve your health, don’t you?

6Stock Up On Breakfast Foods

When you go to the grocery store, don’t just think about lunch and dinner; include breakfast on your list. Make sure you always have plenty of low-fat dairy products and fruits and vegetables on hand.

Having food available that makes a quality breakfast is half the battle. The other half is taking the time to make it.

7Plan Ahead

The best way to ensure you get your day off to a great start is figuring out the night before what to have for breakfast.

If you are having fruit, take the time to cut it up the night before. If you’re having cereal, set out the box and your bowl. If you’re having an omelet, you can chop up the veggies ahead of time.

Any preparations you can make the night before will go a long way toward saving you time in the morning.

8Still No Time For Breakfast?

If those tips aren’t enough to make you eat a great breakfast, try this: make your breakfast portable. There are now a lot of great breakfast items available that you can take with you. Fruit, low-fat yogurt, granola bars or whole grain breakfast bars work well. A hard boiled egg is easy to grab on your way out the door too.

If all you have to do it grab your breakfast while you are on the way out the door, it doesn’t take any time at all.

9Why Is Breakfast Important Summary
